Scholarly Activity
All med-peds residents are required to complete one scholarly activity by the end of their four years here at UM/Jackson, which ranges from community-based needs assessments, quality improvement projects, case series, translational and clinical research projects, and public policy and health advocacy projects. To assist with your scholarly activity, we have integrated into the residency program curricula intended to hone your skills in creating new scholarly work. This curriculum includes the IQRS rotation and a new Med-Peds conference series dedicated to research and scholarly activity skills.
In addition to the mentorship residents get from program leadership and chief residents, our new Director of Scholarly Activity for our program, Victor Cueto, MD, MS, has been added to our team to help assist residents in their projects and to continue to build our research curriculum In addition, his academic work in health disparities and working with minority and immigrant communities complements the advocacy and health equity space that our residents and our program has been dedicated to for many years.
Intro to Quality Improvement, Research, and Systems (iQRS)
Intro to Quality Improvement, Research and Systems (IQRS) is a two-week intern rotation that sets the foundation for your scholarly work during your residency program. This rotation presents residents with the tools including instruction on IRB submissions, database development and management, biostatistics, and bias in research. Critical to this rotation is guidance on initiation of research projects and finding a mentor during intern year. IQRS also provides residents with an introduction to complex healthcare systems, the basics of quality improvement and patient safety and an introduction to the interdisciplinary approach to patient care by shadowing ancillary staff.

Eugene J Sayfie Research Day of the Department of Medicine
The Eugene J. Sayfie, M.D. Research Day is a celebration of the research and creative endeavors of our undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, residents, fellows, and faculty. This is an all-day event with two featured speakers and a myriad of poster presentations throughout the day. There are awards for winner and runner up in each of three categories: Basic Science, Clinical Research, and Public Health/Education. Each winner receives a new iPad as part of the award.
Dr. Henry Gelband Pediatric Research Symposium
The Henry Gelband Pediatric Research Symposium highlights the pediatric mentored research which our graduate students, postdocs, fellows, and residents have participated in during the year. During the research symposium includes basic science, clinical research, quality improvement, case reports, and case studies performed by residents, fellows in the Department of Pediatrics.

Research Resources
All UM/JMH residents have access to the Calder Library, located on the University of Miami’s School of Medicine campus. Research and study spaces are available in the Calder Library. In addition, workshops on additional research tools such as SPSS and RedCap is also hosted by the library, along with medical librarians to assist with research and literature searches.
Biomedical Communications Department
The Biomedical Communications Department offers free tutorials to help UM faculty and residents creating posters for presentations and conferences. They provide assistance with designing, creating, and printing posters and brochures, as well as providing an onsite photography studio.
University of Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute
The University of Miami CTSI provides support for the medical research mission funded through the NIH. We are a member of the National CTSA Consortium, a prestigious group of world-class academic research institutions. Our CTSA hosts free programs and support for researchers through its Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design program.
Residency Scholarly Activity Program
For those who are interested in a physician-scientist career, the RSAP curriculum seeks to improve the quality of the research projects pursued by residents and fellows through the introduction of research focused didactics and a structured research development program.
