MONICA ALBA-SANDOVAL, MD

Medical School: Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá. Colombia Residency: Pediatrics, Long Island College Hospital Fellowship: Pediatric Critical Care, University of Florida at Gainesville.

Dr. Monica Alba-Sandoval joined the University of Miami in July 2014 as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Critical Care. Prior to her joining our institution, she was on faculty at University of Florida and the University of Illinois at Peoria. In 2017, in recognition of her dedication and accomplishments in house staff simulation, she was appointed to the inaugural role of Simulation, Innovation and Technology Director for the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Alba-Sandoval also serves as Associate Fellowship Director for the Pediatric Critical Care Program and Course Director of the Senior Capstone Course for Residency Transition, or “Residency Boot Camp.” For the past four years, she has served as faculty at the Annual Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Boot Camp held at CHOP’s Center for Simulation, training the national cohort of entering PICU fellows. She leads several Train-the-Trainer courses and QI projects and participates in Board Review and OSCEs, serving as a program facilitator.

DONNA WIENER, MD

Medical School: New York University
Residency: Children’s Hospital National Medical Center
Fellowship: Endocrinology, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Donna Wiener, MD, is Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics. Dr. Wiener received her MD from New York University School of Medicine and went on to residency at Children's Hospital National Medical Center. She completed fellowships in Endocrinology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She joined the University of Miami/Jackson Health System Pediatrics program in 1995 and was appointed at the Associate Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Program in 2011. She practices at the ACC Pediatric Resident Continuity Clinic and precepts PGY3s at Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

PAYAL SHAH, DO

Medical School: Nova Southeastern University Residency: Pediatrics, University of Miami/Holtz Children’s Hospital Chief Residency: Pediatrics, University of Miami/Holtz Children’s Hospital

Dr. Shah obtained her BS, cum laude, from the University of Miami in 2009 and her medical doctorate in 2014 from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Shah completed her pediatric residency training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2017, and nominated to serve as chief resident of pediatrics from 2017-2018. She joined our faculty in July 2018, and has been working in our general pediatric practices at Kendall, on Fisher Island, and ACC.


LUIS E. GARCIA-CHACON, MD, PhD

Medical School: Universidad Central del Caribe
Doctorate of Philosophy: Physiology and Biophysics , University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Residency: Pediatrics, University of Miami/Holtz Children’s Hospital

Dr. Garcia-Chacon, is Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and the Interim Section Chief of Pediatric Hospital Medicine within the Division of General Pediatrics.  He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his MD from the Universidad Central del Caribe.  He completed his residency at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine / Jackson Memorial Hospital.  Prior to residency he received a PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.  He is board certified in General Pediatrics as well as Pediatric Hospital Medicine.  He was appointed Associate Program Director in 2022.
