Curriculum Our 4 year curriculum provides a diverse group of inpatient and ambulatory rotations in a variety of settings. Our inpatient rotations are located in Tertiary and Quaternary care institutions, with a balance between our 4 hospitals: Jackson Memorial Hospital, Holtz Children’s Hospital, The University of Miami Hospital and the Miami VA Medical Center. Our ambulatory rotations are located in on-campus in the first year and in Med-Peds community based settings in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years. A truly unique feature of the program is flexibility. We have several special tracks including the Med-Peds Global Health Track, Hospital Medicine, Women’s Health and Physician Scientist tracks. We tailor the four year curriculum to meet your specific career goals while still meeting ACGME RRC requirements. Residents rotate between the two disciplines approximately every three months. Highlights of the schedule include the following:
Med-Peds Block Schedule Our academic year is divided into thirteen 4-week blocks. Residents change disciplines every 3 to 4 months. Please see our sample schedule attached. The primary educational component of the UM/JMH Med-Peds Program is the weekly Med-Peds noon conference series. The Med-Peds noon conference curriculum is based on a four-year curriculum centered on core ambulatory and inpatient topics in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The format includes an Invited Attending Lecture series, Journal club, Board Review, and a 4th Resident Lecture series. In the months of July and August, Interns attend our “Emergency Lecture Series”, a mandatory series of Pediatric and Internal Medicine Noon Conferences, focusing on handling emergencies on the wards, core ambulatory topics, and a series of teaching to teach lectures. Attached is this year's intern-mandatory Emergency Lecture series.
Combined Med-Peds Continuity Practice The combined Med-Peds Continuity Practice is located in the Jackson Memorial Ambulatory Care Center and serves as the continuity clinic experience for all residents in the Med/Peds Program. The combined clinic, located in our ambulatory care center houses both adult and pediatric patients in the same practice. All ambulatory practices use Cerner®, our electronic medical record system, for scheduling, documentation, orders and prescriptions. Each intern is linked to the panel of one of our graduating seniors. Patients are referred by our inpatient nurseries, wards and emergency rooms as well as from third party payers and our subspecialty practices. Patients are scheduled under the resident’s name and each resident has access to add patients to their schedule. Attending coverage includes three Med-Peds trained physicians, as well as categorical pediatricians, and internists for additional coverage when needed.
Our training program is located in Miami, one of the most diverse populations in the United States. We function as a referral center for South Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America. This wide distribution allows for a breadth of training unique to this area of the world. As 65% our graduates practice Med-Peds primary care in the community, we truly value our ambulatory experience. Please browse our "In the Community" webpage for more information about additional training sites.
